Tottenham Hotspur will be meeting fellow English Premier League club Chelsea in the League Cup (Capital One Cup) Final at Wembley Stadium on Sunday March 1st. Spurs made it to the final after drawing 2-2 against League One’s Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on Wednesday, January 28th after winning the first leg 1-0 a week earlier at White Hart Lane. Christian Eriksen scored both goals for Spurs for a 3-2 aggregate to set up a London derby for the final. It’ll be Tottenham’s first appearance in a cup final in the past six years.
Eriksen put Spurs ahead after 28 minutes when he scored on an exquisite free kick to the top corner of the net. However, Sheffield fought back and took the lead when substitute Che Adams found the back of the net in the 77th minute and then again two minutes later. It looked like the match would be heading into extra time at the snowy stadium, but Eriksen broke the hearts of Sheffield players and fans when he slotted home a pass from Harry Kane and scored the winner with just two minutes to go in the match.
The last time Tottenham reached a cup final was back in 2008 and it was also against Chelsea in the League Cup with Spurs edging them 2-1. Sheffield gave it a good run in the cup competition by beating Southampton and West Ham of the Premier League on their way to the semifinals. The club, which is managed by former England international Nigel Clough, also made it to the final four of last year’s FA Cup and have the well-earned reputation of being giant killers.
The game changed in United’s favour when the 18-year-old Adams scored a pair of goals shortly after entering the pitch as Sheffield’s third substitute of the night. After the match clough told the media, “I’m incredibly proud of the players. It was just a bit of quality that made the difference. Eriksen’s two goals for Tottenham tonight were superb.”
