Liverpool and Spurs reach League Cup semis

Liverpool advanced to the semi finals of the English League Cup (Capital One Cup) on December 17 as the Premier League club beat Championship League leaders Bournemouth 3-1 on the south coast. Tottenham Hotspur also reached the final four of the tournament with a 4-0 home win over fellow Premier League side Newcastle United. Liverpool will now meet Premier League leaders Chelsea in one two-legged semi final matchup while Spurs will face off against Sheffield United of League One.

Raheem Sterling scored twice for Liverpool and Lazar Markovic added the other. Sterling scored for the first time since September when he found the back of the net after 20 minutes with a header. Markovic scored his first goal for the club seven minutes later to double the Reds lead. Sterling made it 3-1 after 51 minutes and Dan Gosling closed the gap for Bournemouth in the 57th.

After the match Adam Lallana paid tribute to Sterling, his Liverpool and England teammate, by saying, “We knew we would have to show quality tonight and the little man Sterling was brilliant. Week in, week out he’s worked hard and eventually his goals were going to come and it’s a credit to how mature he is at such a young age.”

Over at White Hart Lane in London, Nabil Bentaleb, Nacer Chadli, Harry Kane and Roberto Soldado all scored for Spurs in their whitewash over Newcastle. Bentaleb opened the scoring after 18 minutes when Newcastle’s 21-year-old keeper Jak Alnwick fumbled the ball on a corner kick. Chadli made it 2-0 in the 46th minute and the 21-year-old Kane extended the lead to three in the 65th when he scored his 12th goal in all competitions this campaign. Soldado then came on for Kane and finished the job in the 70th minute by scoring for just the fourth time in 2014/15.
