Lazio signs Mauricio and Wesley Hoedt

Italian Serie A club Lazio added some depth in the recent January transfer window by signing defenders Wesley Hoedt and Mauricio. The club was sitting in fifth place in the league with 31 points from nine wins, four draws and six losses when they made the deals. They were 13 points behind league-leading Juventus, but were just a pair of points behind Napoli and Sampdoria. Lazio has signed the newcomers with the aim of finishing the season high enough to earn a spot in the 2015/16 European Champions League tournament.

Mauricio was signed on loan while the addition of Dutchman Wesley Hoedt was a permanent deal. The year-old central defender Mauricio was acquired from Sporting Lisbon of the Portuguese league and will be staying with Lazio for the remainder of the current campaign. Mauricio had appeared in 20 games in all competitions for Sporting Lisbon so far this term. However, centre-back Hoedt won’t be able to help his new club this season as he was signed from AZ of Holland and won’t join Lazio until the end of the campaign.

Hoedt has played four games for the Dutch Under-20 squad and Lazio is hoping he can continue to develop at the same rate once he  moves to Italy. The 20-year-old has one goal in 14 games so far in 2014/15 and is excited about joining Lazio in the summer. He told the media, “I’m very happy to have signed with Lazio. I feel really great. I’ll be a Lazio player starting from next season and I hope to play well. I want to give everything I’ve got for my teammates. I can’t wait for July to start playing. I’ll try watching all of Lazio’s games so I can integrate myself right off the bat. I hope Lazio can qualify for the Champions League.”
