European Champions League quarterfinal draw
The draw for the final eight teams of the 2014/15 European Champions League took place on Friday, March 20 and as we all know by now there were no English Premier League squads involved. There s one team from Italy, one from Portugal and Germany, two from France and three from Spain. Italian Serie A reigning champions and current league-leaders Juventus will face off against Monaco of the French Ligue 1.
We also have Portuguese side Porto squaring off against current German Bundesliga leaders and reigning champions Bayern Munich. There’s an all-Spanish La Liga showdown as cross-city rivals Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid have been paired with each other. This is a rematch of last season’s Champions League final as Real Madrid beat Atletico 4-1 in the final. The match was level 1-1 after 90 minutes, but Real wrapped things up with three goals in the extra 30-minute session. Atletico Madrid are the reigning Spanish league champions.
The final quarterfinal clash will take place between reigning French Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain and Spanish giants Barcelona. In addition, the Europa League quarterfinal matchups were announced. These are Wolfsburg of Germany against Italy’s Napoli, Dynamo Kiev of Ukraine versus Fiorentina of Italy, Dnipro of Ukraine against Belgium’s Club Brugge and Spanish side Sevilla versus Zenit St Petersburg of Russia. Teams from Ukraine and Russia couldn’t be drawn against each other in the Europa League.
The quarterfinals will consist of two-legged ties with each team playing a match at home and one on the road. If the aggregate is level after two games the first tie breaker will be the away-goals rule. If the sides are still level then 30 minutes of extra time will be played. If this solves nothing the match will be decided by a penalty shootout.
