Euro 2016 Qualifying Roundup Nov 15

The qualifying stages for the 2016 European Championships in France continued on November 15 with games in Groups C, E, and G.

Group C
Spain beat Belarus 4-0 at home to put them in a second-place tie with Ukraine and pull to within three points of table-topping Slovakia. David Silva opened the scoring in the 27th minute and Paco Alcacer doubled the lead three minutes before halftime. Diego Costa finally scored his first competitive international goal for Spain in the 69th minute and Bernat rounded out the scoring in the 88th.

Luxembourg lost on their home turf 3-0 to visiting Ukraine with Andriy Yarmolenko scoring all three goals for the visitors. It was Ukraine’s third straight win while Luxembourg remain winless and in the basement of the group. Yarmolenko scored in the 33rd, 53rd and 56th minutes. In the other Group C contest leaders Slovakia left Macedonia with all three points courtesy of a 2-0 win. Kucka scored in the 25th minute and Nemec added the second goal in the 38th.

Group E
England came from behind to beat Slovenia 3-1 at Wembley Stadium in London to remain undefeated in the group. England is now four for four and has a six-point lead over their closest rivals Slovenia and, Switzerland and Lithuania. Jordan Henderson scored in his own goal in the 58th minute to give Slovenia the lead, but Wayne Rooney, playing his 100th game for England, leveled it just a minute later on a penalty kick. Danny Welbeck then added goals in the 66th and 72nd minutes to wrap things up.

Switzerland thumped Lithuania 4-0 at home in a crucial game for the Swiss to give them six points and place them level in second with Lithuania and Slovenia. The game was goalless until the 64th minute when Drmic put the Swiss ahead. Fabian Schar doubled the lead just two minutes later and Xherdan Shaqiri added a pair in the 80th and 90th minutes to sew up the victory. In the other group match, San Marino played to a 0-0 home draw with Estonia. The draw gave San Marino their first Euro qualifying point in their past 61 qualifying games. It was just the fifth time they have avoided defeat in their past 124 contests.

Group G
Austria beat Russia 1-0 at home in Vienna to move four points clear at top of the group. The Austrians have won three out of their four matches with substitute Rubin Okotie scoring the lone goal of the game in the 73rd minute. Moldova was beaten 1-0 at home by tiny Liechtenstein. Captain Franz Burgmeier scored the only goal on a free kick in the 74th minute. The other Group G game took place in Montenegro and saw the host nation play to a 1-1 draw with Sweden. Zlatan Ibrahimovic put Sweden ahead after just nine minutes, but Stevan Jovetic leveled the contest on an 80th-minute penalty kick.
