Chelsea beat fellow English Premier League club Liverpool 1-0 at home at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday, January 27 to reach the final of the League Cup (Capital One Cup) at Wembley on March 1. The two sides went into the match on even terms as the first leg of the tie ended 1-1 at Anfield last week. Chelsea will now face the winner of the Sheffield United vs Tottenham Hotspur semifinal. Spurs of the Premier League held a 1-0 lead over the League One side after the first leg at White Hart Lane.

Chelsea pulled off the win when defender Branislav Ivanovic headed in a free kick from Willian of Brazil in the fourth minute of extra time. The match had finished 0-0 at the end of 90 minutes of regulation time and Chelsea goes through with a 2-1 aggregate victory. Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers was attempting to reach his first cup final with the club, but fell short of his goal. However, Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has reached his first cup final in his second stint with the Blues. Mourinho guided Chelsea to League Cup victories in 2005 and 2007.

Chelsea, who lead the Premier League, was lucky to finish the intriguing match with 11 men on the pitch as Spanish international striker Diego Costa stamped on both Martin Skrtel and Emre Can of Liverpool and got away with it as referee Michael Oliver did nothing about it. Costa stamped on the right ankle of Can in front of the team benches and Phil Dowd, the fourth official, but got off scot-free. This leads fans to question the role of the fourth official in the match and why he’s even there if he doesn’t have any power. Costa then stepped on the left foot of Skrtel in the second half after the Liverpool defender came in with a slide tackle.
