Arsenal 4/1 to beat Monaco or money back

The European Champions League continues on Wednesday, Feb 25th with Arsenal of the English Premier League hosting Monaco of the French Ligue 1 at the Emirates Stadium in London. This is a round-of-16 matchup and the two sides have never met before in European competition. Monaco advanced by winning Group C and the Gunners finished second in Group D in the group stage. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger used to hold the same job with Monaco a couple of decades ago from 1987 to 1994.

Monaco will be without Toulalan as he’s suspended while Arsenal has an injury list which includes Mikel Arteta, Mathieu Debuchy, Abou Diaby, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and Aaron Ramsey. Monaco’s injured players include Bakayoko, Ricardo Carvalho, João Moutinho, and Andrea Raggi. This is the first time in a decade that Monaco has made it this far in the tournament. They won Group C with 11 points while Arsenal were runners up in Group D with 13 points. The two sides met in August in a pre-season friendly in London with Monaco winning 1-0.

This is Arsenal’s 15th straight time in the round of 16, but they’ve been knocked out at this stage in the past four campaigns. The last time they won at this stage was back in 2009/10 when they beat Portuguese side Porto on aggregate by a 6-2 score. Since then they’ve been knocked out by FC Barcelona, AC Milan and FC Bayern München (last two years). The Gunners have three wins and a draw at home this season in the competition and their overall record against French sides at home is five wins, three draws and two losses. They’re also 4-0 in two-legged ties against French teams.

Monaco last went to the quarterfinals in 2003/04 and they made it to the final that year. They reached the round of 16 the next season, but were beaten by PSV Eindhoven 3-0 on aggregate. Monaco has a win and draw on the road in this year’s Champions League and allowed just one goal against in the group stage. They’ve been beaten just once in five games in England, which was to Liverpool in the 2004/05 group stage.
